Effective Series Resistance

Each capacitor and inductor model in the Modelithics COMPLETE Library™ incorporates a highly accurate, frequency-dependent Effective Series Resistance (ESR) representation derived from precision measurements of individual components. Rather than relying on fixed or nominal resistance values, empirical ESR data is collected across a broad frequency range and used to generate mathematical expressions that accurately capture real-world loss mechanisms. This advanced ESR characterization enables the models to predict component behavior with greater fidelity under actual operating conditions.

Accurate ESR modeling is especially critical in high-performance RF and microwave circuits, where even small losses can significantly impact overall system performance. Because ESR directly influences insertion loss, efficiency, and the quality factor (Q) of passive networks, it plays a key role in the design and optimization of filters, impedance matching networks, resonators, couplers, and other low-loss circuits. By incorporating measured frequency-dependent ESR behavior, Modelithics models provide more reliable simulation results, helping engineers better predict circuit performance, reduce design iterations, and achieve stronger correlation between simulation and measured hardware.
