Short Course: Demystifying Noise Parameter Measurements and Model Extraction

This short course aims to demystify noise parameter measurements and model extraction, and includes topics such as: an introduction to noise figure and noise parameter concepts; noise parameter calibration; measurement and extraction techniques and best practices; how to validate noise parameter data; an in-depth review of critical variables that affect the accuracy of noise parameter measurements; noise parameter de-embedding; and noise model theory and extraction.

Industry Workshop: Application of Advanced Non-Linear Models to High Efficiency GaN Power Amplifier Design

This two-hour workshop will focus on understanding the basic principles behind non-linear power amplifier design and will outline simulation-based design methods utilizing Keysight ADS, that starts with a non-linear GaN HEMT model and outlines a series of steps to accomplish basic Class AB PA Design that addresses stability considerations and is designed against a specific set of gain, power, efficiency and VSWR considerations. Extensions to address other high efficiency modes of operation such as Class F, Class J and Doherty amplifier configurations will also be addressed. The first part of the workshop will focus on methods and design flows and the second part will present practical design examples and revealing simulation demonstrations that illustrate various PA design flow steps and simulation methods. The PA design simulation demonstrations will be performed using Keysight Technologies’ Advanced Design System soft-ware and a state-of-the-art non-linear GaN models available from Modelithics for a range of Qorvo GaN power transistors.

Industry Workshop: Introduction to RF and Microwave Filters

Technologies and filter topologies available to the RF/microwave engineer will be explained. The fundamental trade off facing the designer is between available volume for the filter and unloaded Q (insertion loss). Given a desired filter topology, there are many filter design programs that can give us a reasonable starting point. Applying EM simulation and port tuning to that starting point is then a good strategy to minimize design cycle time. To be emphasized will be simulation-based flows for first-pass filter design success using state-of-the-art software and component models, including compensation for parasitic effects and Monte-carlo tolerance analysis and design centering.
